Preparing for Disasters Overview: Page #4.

First Order of Business in a P.E. Get to Know the Regional area in which you live.

1….Drive the roads and streets all around your area to get familiar with the difficulty or ease of travel , and time to get anywhere.

2….Determine if there is an area outside your home as a safe place to migrate to in case of an emergency, short term or long term.

3….Identify as many routes from your home to the safe place, and time the travel time for each route.

4….What P.E.s would suggest you Bug-In, or shelter in place and why?

5….What P.E.s would suggest you Bug-Out to a safe place and why?

6….If Bugging In, do you have sufficient supplies to sustain you until P.E. is over, food, water, heat, ability to cook, lighting, protection, etc?

7….If Bugging out, what is the best route #1,#2, & #3. to travel to your safe place?

8….How much Prep Mats will be needed to get to safe place via route #1,#2, & #3?

9….What Prep Items will each person need for the trip. Can you cache Items along the route for use later? How much can each person carry?

10…Train getting to the safe place via Vehicle, Bicycle, and walking. Time each method of travel.

11…Find out the problems of each route,. Can you adjust your route and/or method of travel to get through each route? Are some routes too unsafe?

12…What Natural resources are there in-route to aid your journey. Take photos of route & nat resources, mark on maps

  • What Natural shelter is available on each route. Where are water sources.
  • Learn military squad travel spacing, learn how not to daylight your position as you travel. Learn escape & Evasion techniques.
  • What evasive cover is available to travel through such as trees.
  • What natural foods are available. Know each food and practice using it before it is needed.
  • What Natural plants are available for medicine.
  • What animal life could you encounter along the way?
  • Resource on each route- Deer, Elk, Rabbit, etc.
  • Adversary on each route – Bear, Cougar, Wolf, Bobcat, etc.

13…What weather could cause prob along the route to destination. How to solve these Problems.

  • Clothing for Rain, Cold, Heat, etc.
  • Equipment. Tarps for rain or sun, water filters for pure water, Etc
  • Resources such as 10 essentials, 1st Aid with knowledge to use, extra water, food, Go Bags, Etc.

14…If Travel time to destination is more than one day….

  • What are known shelter destinations along the way so options are available if in trouble.
  • Are you going to a family members location? Have you set that up with them.  Is it OK to be there?
  • Is it feasible to pre-stage some supplies along the way so pack weight is low. ( Cache )
  • As you practice traveling the route, what are areas to avoid safety wise and why.
    • High crime areas in high population areas, because of known gang activity, or breakdown of societal structure.
    • Can night travel solve or lessen these areas so you can use this route.
    • If you can’t find a way to solve the problem, change to a different route, #2 or #3.
    • If one route become unusable due to changes in human activity, drop it off your list and try a different route.
