Emergency / Disaster Lighting

Emergency Lighting During a Disaster event.

Emergency Lighting might be needed:

  • In a power outage at home.
  • When you are away from Home.
  • Should you have a vehicle breakdown and become stranded.
  • During and after a house fire.
  • For use as an emergency signal device.
  • For emergency escape routes in home during Earthquakes or fire.
  • For Inclusion in your emergency kits.
  • For use while camping or backpacking, or mountaineering.

Don’t rely on one type of lighting only.

You should have different kinds of lighting for use in Emergencies.

  1. Electric Bulb Lighting / high power consumption.
  2. L.E.D. Bulb Lighting / low power consumption.
  3. Halogen Bulb Lighting / High Power consumption.
  4. Florescent Bulb Lighting / Low power consumption / High contamination potential upon bulb breakage.  Don’t get cut with the mercury coated glass shards.
  5. Flashlights with LED Bulb – battery, crank, shake, solar.
  6. Oil Lamps / Dietz Hurricane Lamps / Wind proof.
  7. Lanterns / Battery, Gas, or Propane.
  8. Candles / Beeswax the best, Parafin second best.
  9. Glow Sticks
  10. Flares / avoid breathing the smoke.

Which ones should be used in which situation for safety:

  • If you suspect possible gas leak (5,9)
  • To use inside a Tent (2,5,6,7,9)
  • Around Unsupervised Young Children (1,2,3,5,7a,9)
  • If someone in the room is on oxygen (1,2,3,5,7a,9)

Remember to think in terms of fire or explosion.  What lighting can I use that will minimize the possibility of igniting a fire or explosion when turned on.
